How it works

US year abroad calendar in the app

Federal tax return

April 15 is the regular date. The IRS gives an automatic two-month extension to June 15 to people whose home and main place of work are outside the United States and Puerto Rico, and October 15 is the extended date with Form 4868.

FBAR

FinCEN Form 114 is due April 15 for the year before, with an automatic extension to October 15. No request is needed. The app links to the IRS page and FinCEN's BSA E-Filing System.

Voting from abroad

Federal Election Day, with FVAP's guide to absentee ballots. A January reminder to send a new Federal Post Card Application is marked as the app's suggestion, because FVAP sets no date for it.

Reminders you choose

Pick the topics that apply to you: taxes, FBAR, or voting. Free reminds you 30 days before each date. Complete adds a second reminder one week before.

Questions

Common questions

When is the US tax return due for Americans living abroad?

The IRS publishes April 15 as the regular date and gives an automatic two-month extension to June 15 to US citizens and resident aliens whose home and main place of business are outside the United States and Puerto Rico. With Form 4868, the extended date is October 15. Tax owed is still due April 15.

When is the FBAR due?

The IRS publishes April 15 for the calendar year before, with an automatic extension to October 15. You do not need to request the extension.

How do I vote from abroad?

FVAP explains how overseas citizens send a Federal Post Card Application to request an absentee ballot. FVAP encourages a new one every year and whenever you move. The app reminds you in mid-January.

Does the app file anything for me?

No. The app shows the dates and the official pages. Filing happens with the IRS, FinCEN, or your election office directly.
