Passports and family

Passports for children need both parents' consent and an in-person appointment. So does an adult passport that is damaged, lost, or too old to renew by mail. We prepare every form and the appointment, so nothing is sent back. Our paid help with a birth abroad is paused while we confirm the rules, and the State Department's guide is linked below.

Life moves

Plan a move between countries

Moving to Latin America

Handled by our sister service, Settle in Latin America.

Moving anywhere else

Start with the visa-ready documents your destination asks for.

How it works

How a request works

  1. Pay online or ask for a quote

Pay online for a standard case, or send a request. Tell us the service, the country you live in now, and when you need it.

  2. We confirm your case

We confirm we can take it and what it covers. A quote lists our fee and every government and partner fee, and you pay nothing until you accept. If we can't take a case you paid for, we refund everything.

  3. We prepare the paperwork

We prepare the forms, checklists, and your destination's requirements. A person checks every case.

  4. Partners handle the physical steps

Couriers, notaries, and translators handle the agreed physical steps. Only eligible customers located in the US use an FBI-approved channeler. Customers abroad apply directly to the FBI.

  5. You sign and submit

You sign what needs your signature. The agency sets its own processing time and makes the decision.

Pricing

How pricing works

One total, every fee shown

Each service shows a total for a standard case. Our fee covers our partners' steps and tracked delivery to you abroad. Government fees are added at cost with no markup and named with their agency.

The free official route, shown first

Every service desk links to the official way to do it yourself. We are a private service, not a government agency.

A refund if we can't help

If we can't take a case you paid for, we refund everything. If we can't submit it after work starts, we refund our fee. Government fees are refunded only when the agency refunds them.

No promised government dates

We commit to our own preparation time. Agencies set their own processing times.

How we're paid

We charge the preparation and coordination fee shown in each total. Government and partner fees pass through at cost. Translation costs extra at the partner's rate.

Who is responsible for the work?

US Expat Desk is responsible for every case it accepts. If an error of ours causes a return, we redo the work and refund our fee.

Questions

Common questions

Are you a government agency?

No. US Expat Desk is a private business, not affiliated with the US government, the State Department, or the FBI. Every service desk links to the free official route, and our fee is always shown separately from government fees.

How do I start?

For a standard case with a fixed total, such as an FBI background check with apostille, pay online from the services page. For anything else, send a request with the form on this site. We reply by email with a full quote, and you pay nothing until you accept it.

How do I pay?

By card, on a secure checkout run by Stripe, our payment processor. Stripe emails your receipt. Quotes include a payment link that opens a Stripe invoice for the quoted total, which you can also download as a PDF.

What if you can't take my case after I pay?

We confirm every paid case by email. If we can't take it, we refund everything you paid. If you live in the EU, the EEA, or the UK, please request a quote instead of paying, because we don't take cases from residents there yet.

What should I leave out of my request?

Leave out passport numbers, Social Security numbers, bank details, passwords, and images of documents. Once you accept a quote, we explain how to share what the case needs securely.

How long does it take?

Your quote states our own preparation time. Agencies such as the FBI and the State Department set their own processing times, so we never promise them.

Do you prepare tax returns?

No. We organize your documents for tax season and refer you to a licensed expat tax professional, who prepares and signs your return and sets their own fee. Our US tax and FBAR deadline calendar is free.

Can you tell me if my child qualifies for US citizenship?

No. That is a legal question for the consulate or an immigration lawyer. Our paid help with a birth abroad is paused while we confirm the rules, and our services page links to the State Department's guide.

What does membership cost?

Membership is not yet available. It is planned at USD 129 per household per year, or USD 14 per month, and opens once our first services are running smoothly.

Which countries do you serve?

Americans living anywhere outside the EU, the EEA, and the UK, and Americans in the US getting ready to move abroad, including to Spain or Portugal. We don't take cases yet from people who already live in the EU, the EEA, or the UK. Country profiles on this site cover 28 countries in more depth.
