Free renewal planner

When should you review a renewal before it expires?

This calculator gives you a review date ahead of an expiration. Enter the expiration date from a passport, driver's license, lease, insurance policy, or visa page, then choose how many days before it you want to review the renewal. You get the review date and see exactly how it was worked out. Reviewing early matters abroad because renewals can involve mail, appointments, and time-zone differences. The review date is your own planning cue. It does not change when the document expires or when any renewal is officially due, and the calculator never reads or stores document numbers. The result is free and stays in your browser.

Complete result is free. Runs in your browser. Reviewed September 2026.

What expires, and how early do you want to look?

Only the date is needed. Never enter a document number.

This example is worked out with the values shown. The interactive page recalculates as you type and adds print and export options.

Example inputs
Expiration dateMay 15, 2027
Review this many days before180

Review date. Monday, November 16, 2026. 180 days before Saturday, May 15, 2027. The expiration itself does not change.

The suggested review date is 2026-11-16. The expiration date remains 2027-05-15.

Assumptions

  • Calendar dates are user-entered planning values, not official deadlines.
  • Date-only arithmetic counts calendar days without local-midnight time-zone conversion.
  • The earlier review date does not determine validity or when renewal is legally required.

How the result is worked out

The expiration date is shifted back by the lead time using date-only arithmetic. The expiration is shown unchanged beside the review date so the two are never confused.

A realistic example

Your passport expires on May 15, 2027. You would like six months to handle a renewal by mail from abroad, so you choose 180 days. The review date is Monday, November 16, 2026. The passport still expires on May 15, 2027.

What this calculator cannot decide

One expiration and one lead time at a time. Lead time from 0 to 730 days. It does not know official renewal windows, processing times, or validity rules for any document or country.

The calculator does not decide eligibility, legal obligations, document sufficiency, or official outcomes. Do not enter passport numbers, identity numbers, passwords, or original files.

Sources and review

No original source is needed. The result is calendar arithmetic on the date and lead time you enter.

Common questions

How many days ahead should I review a passport?

Many Americans abroad choose six to nine months because renewal by mail and appointments take time. The calculator accepts any lead time from 0 to 730 days and does not recommend one.

Does the review date change the expiration?

No. The document expires on the date printed on it. The review date is only your planning cue.

Do you store my passport or license number?

No. The calculator only uses an expiration date and a number of days. It never asks for document numbers.

Can I get a reminder?

The free page can add the review date to your calendar. Complete keeps one expiration date per record and shows the review in your household dates.
